Lower Urinary Tract Disease (LUTD) encompasses a range of conditions affecting the lower urinary tract, including the bladder and urethra, and generates clinically similar symptoms in both dogs and cats.
Among the most common causes of LUTD are idiopathic cystitis in cats and bacterial infections in dogs. Obesity and stress represent primary risk factors that can increase susceptibility to urinary tract diseases in our pets. For prevention, especially in cats, promoting adequate water intake is recommended.
LUTD impacts the lower urinary tract in both dogs and cats. In dogs, urinary tract infections (UTIs) can have an incidence of up to 27%. Virtually all of these infections are caused by pathogenic bacteria ascending from the external genitals and the urethra, with E. coli being one of the most common culprits.
Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), also known as feline interstitial cystitis, is a relatively common disorder in veterinary practice. It can manifest as recurrent obstructive episodes, more common in males, or as non-obstructive episodes, which are common in young and female cats. Its origin is unknown in many cases and has been underdiagnosed to date due to a lack of etiopathogenic understanding or its similarity to other urinary syndromes.
