About Feline Herpes Virus (FHV-1):

Feline herpesvirus type 1 is a viral infection that affects cats worldwide, being one of the main causes of respiratory infections in domestic cats. It is also known as feline rhinotracheitis virus because it causes respiratory symptoms in felines.

Symptoms of Feline Herpes Virus

Cats infected with FHV-1 may present a series of clinical signs mainly related to the upper respiratory tract:

  • Sneezing and coughing.
  • Nasal and ocular discharge.
  • Fever.
  • Lethargy.
  • In more severe cases, the infection can lead to mouth ulcers and breathing difficulties.

Transmission

It is important to note that cats can carry the virus for life, and episodes of respiratory disease reactivation are common, especially in stressful situations.

FHV-1 spreads mainly through direct contact between infected cats (mutual grooming or inhalation of viral particles in the environment). It is also transmissible from mother to offspring.

Remember that if you notice any symptoms or unusual behavior, you should consult your veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.
