How to care for a newborn kitten: breastfeeding problems and more

Orphaned or newborn kittens with difficulties in suckling and breastfeeding may face problems that endanger their health, quality of life, and survival.

Among the most urgent problems faced by a newborn or few days old kitten:

Malnutrition

Lack of essential nutrients obtained from natural maternal milk.

Dehydration

Lack of breastfeeding can lead to dehydration in cats and ferrets provided with maternal milk.

Compromised immunity

Maternal milk also provides passive immunity through maternal antibodies. Without this natural protection, they are more susceptible to infections and diseases.

Developmental problems

Lack of adequate food during the first weeks of life can negatively affect the physical and cognitive development of the offspring.
