Skin Lesions in Dogs and Cats: Paw Pads, Elbows, Nose, and Snout

Small lesions on the extremities and especially sensitive areas are concerns in pets such as dogs and cats. These areas include paw pads, elbows, nose, and snout. Why? Because they are areas that are constantly exposed to the outside environment when animals move, which can cause skin problems of varying severity.

Paw Pads:

They are the thick skin pads on the paws of dogs and cats. They can suffer minor injuries due to various reasons, such as walking on abrasive or sharp surfaces, burns from heat or cold, and embedded foreign objects. If you think there may be a problem, check your pet's paws for skin wounds, abrasions, burns, or inflammation. Your pet may limp or excessively lick their paws if they are in pain.

Elbows:

These are small joints on the elbows of the front legs, and they can suffer injuries due to constant friction with hard or rough surfaces, potentially causing a dermatological problem. Look for swelling, redness, or calluses on your pet's elbows. They may lick (excessive grooming) or bite the affected area.

Nose and Snout:

They can be sensitive and prone to injuries due to their exposure to the outdoor environment and possible allergies. If you notice anything unusual such as dryness, scaling, redness, or wounds, you should consult a veterinarian. Also, pay attention if they sneeze or constantly rub their nose.

It is essential to be attentive to signs of injuries in these sensitive areas. If necessary, they will be adequately treated through the care of your trusted veterinarian.
